On the road back
to Yosemite, as we drove to Glacier Point, we visited the Yosemite
Sugar Pine Railway, which is right by the main road. We arrived at
10.30 to be told that the only train that morning was due to depart
at 11.00. We duly bought our tickets and joined the ride, through
sugar pine woods. The engines, rolling stock and track were all
purchased from the original lumber company and have been lovingly
restored. The lumber company operated from 1899 to 1931 and the
railway operates on a narrow gauge track. We rode on Shay engine
number 10, which was an oil powered steam engine and massive. See the
