YOSEMITE SUGAR PINE RAILWAY AND BASS LAKE

Yosemite Sugar Pine Railway

On the road back to Yosemite, as we drove to Glacier Point, we visited the Yosemite Sugar Pine Railway, which is right by the main road. We arrived at 10.30 to be told that the only train that morning was due to depart at 11.00. We duly bought our tickets and joined the ride, through sugar pine woods. The engines, rolling stock and track were all purchased from the original lumber company and have been lovingly restored. The lumber company operated from 1899 to 1931 and the railway operates on a narrow gauge track. We rode on Shay engine number 10, which was an oil powered steam engine and massive. Bass Lake

Our stay for two nights at Bass lake was very enjoyable. Apparently it is a very fashionable place to holiday and several films have been made there. Our wooden shalet on two levels was excellent and we had a view of the Lake from our balcony, which was excellent to sit on drinking Budweiser and smoking a cigar and letting the world go by!
