From Ashland we
drove down Interstate 5 Highway and Mount Shasta loomed larger and
larger as we drove down the highway. We were now back in California.
We left the Interstate at Redding and took Route 44 to Lassen
Volcanic National Park.

Mount Shasta

A stop at the
visitor center for a bite of lunch and an ice cream brought the local
birds out to see what crumbs they could find. |

Lassen Peak
erupted in 1914 and 1915 and since then has had minimum activity.
However, it is one of the "actie" volcanos, that could
cause further eruptions. |

Lassen geothermal
area - Sulphur works, Bumpass Hell (largest), Little Hot Springs
Valley, Boiling Springs Lake, Devils Kitchen, and Terminal Geyser -
offer bubbling mud pots, steaming fumaroles, and boiling water. Some
of these thermal features are getting hotter. Scientists think that
Lassen Volcanic National Park and Mount Shasta are the most likely
candidates in the Cascades to join Mount Saint Helens as active volcanoes. |

From Lassen
Volcanic Park we drove through magnificent forests down to Truckee,
where we stayed the night. During the journey we could see this fire,
which continued to be seen by us for the next 24 hours.
