Moab and Arches National Park

Canyonlands by Night

This was our third visit to Moab and we had pre-booked to go again on the Canyonlands by Night evening trip.  This is an absolute must experience for anyone who visits Moab and involves floating down the floodlit Colorado River at night in a jet boat, accompanied by a spoken and musical commentary, after motoring upstream just before dusk.  The excursion starts with an excellent Dutch Roast dinner at the Canyonlands by Night headquarters on the main road going out of Moab towards Arches National Park.  They are found on the left, immediately after crossing the river bridge.  When dining is finished we all got on the large jet boat, that carries around 50 people, and then cruise upstream, with an excellent guide to point out the various items of interest along the way.  Then the last light fades into darkness and the boat begins to drift downstream.  From the road alongside the river bank the light truck turns on its searchlight and the river walls become a mix between floodlight and shadow. This is an out of this world experience.  We also met Preston again, who helps run the family business.  He is a great guy and welcomed us in his usual friendly way.  You can find out more about Canyonlands by Night here.

Humming birds at Canyonlands by Night

If you call into Canyonlands by Night in the daytime and sit for a minute or two on their outside porch, you will see tiny humming birds drinking the sugar flavoured water from the hanging bird trays.

Arches

Our hotel at Moab was The Gonzo Inn, which was in the centre of the town.  It was comfortable and considering we booked it from the Internet, when other hotels were full, we were not disappointed.  Arches National Park is just a couple of miles north of Moab and a half day visit is barely enough to see the sights.  There are towering cliffs, amazing arches and the La Sal Mountains as a backdrop.  There are no facilitiess once inside the Park and no petrol stations.  The Visitor Centre at the Park entrance is worth a visit.
