USA Holiday - 2005

Florida Keys and New York

Sombrero Beach at Marathon

This holiday was arranged within two weeks of our daughter telling us she would look after the dog, while we were away. Initially we considered just going to Florida, but the airlines were so busy we could not get a flight back as we wanted. So we decided to make a double break and fly from Miami to New York and stay there for a few days before flying home. Our flights were booked with American Airways and we were very impressed with their service and especially the extra leg room given, compared to Virgin or British Airways. Our holiday started on 1st April 2005, when we flew from Heathrow to Miami. We hired a rental car (Chrysler Sebring Convertible) and stayed the first night at the Best Western Gateway to the Keys Hotel at Homestead, near Florida City.

The first day (Saturday) was spend visiting the Everglades National Park.

We stayed at the town of Marathon, half-way along the Keys for the next six days, and spent much of our time Around The Florida Keys.

We spent the Tuesday on a double event trip, which involved Kyaking and a Wild Dolphin Encounter.

On Wednesday we visited the Dolphin Research Center at Grassy Key, where Penny splashed with dolphins.

During our holiday at the Keys we encountered some wonderful Sunsets.

Our Accommodation at Marathon was very satisfactory.

The weather was good, with sun every day. On Friday night and Saturday there was thunder and rain, but this did not cause much inconvenience as we drove up to Miami, staying the night at the Miami International Airport Hotel.

Saturday we flew to New York. We stayed here until our flight back to Heathrow on Tuesday evening. We "did" all of the usual tourist things, Empire State, Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, United Nations, Ground Zero, Times Square, and Central Park, plus the Broadway performance of Mama Mia! Overall a fantastic holiday.
