Valley of Fire and The Wedding

Beehives, Valley of Fire

The Valley of Fire State Park is some 70 miles north of Vegas and just over an hour's drive.  Our friends had arranged for their wedding there on the Friday, so Penny and John decided to visit and explore on a preview trip on the Thursday.  The Park is isolated and in the middle of the desert.  The rocks were very red and had unusual shapes and surfaces, caused by the weathering of many years.

We then drove back to Vegas, via the shores of Lake Mead Recreational Area, stopping at Echo Bay to view the Marina and Lake.

The Wedding

Wedding at Valley of Fire

The day of the wedding was thundery and stormy.  Vegas had not had rain since February.  Not the ideal day for a wedding in the middle of the desert!  We travelled north from Vegas, along Route 15 in two white limos.  Then on to the narrow and bumpy local road to the Valley of Fire.  The wedding was to be held behind the Visitor Center, among the rocks.  As we arrived it was spitting with rain and we climbed up a path to the ceremony area.  The local wedding organiser did a good job, hurrying people along, taking photos and video and generally jollying along the proceedings.  When the preacher man arrived to conduct the ceremony, he was a type cast of what we thought a preacher man should be.  He was very good and brought a sense of reverence with humour to the event.  The weather immediately improved and even the sun came out for the occasion.  The service was fairly short and maybe the rocks were a little too dark and imposing for the photography.

The storm clouds gathered again, once the ceremony was over and we quickly returned to the limos, to take us back to Vegas
